You called it. That's normal for the coin.

The initials were added to that location starting in 1918 and have been there ever since.

i have several Lincoln pennies from the 70s mintage and this is the only one that has vdb on it...so I figure others mustve been rubbed off?

Maybe, or more likely the coins were struck with very worn dies that can leave little trace of VDB. VDB is raised on the die for these coins and takes a beating with each strike as the metal of the planchet flows outward. Over time, these types of devices can get worn away to the point of unrecognition.
