Its kinda odd -I don't see cast lines or bubbles. but it looks fake( not accusing anyone of anything I just have my suspicions by the sheen of this coin- esp around the chip( looks painted on or plated)

Do you notice any fakes in the guys store?

Thoughts?

Cheers!

We are not perfect and sometimes even honest dealers make mistakes and possibly miss a bad coin they put up for sale. This might be the case with Tim who has been known to be and honest and trusted dealer. The old expression "Buy the book before the coin" applies. It would be much easier to spot fakes than.

Coinnewbie3;

In the case of Tim, you write he was "outted" implying he was knowingly selling fake coins. You don't know this. Then you openly ask, "Are they still fake?" Again, implying they were always fake. You post from the Netherlands, a country known for anti slander and libel laws going back to the Dutch courts good work on such matters. Respectfully sir you really are not even qualifying your words like you did earlier in the string when you spoke of Holding History's coins and wondered if they were fake. Now you just openly run down the reputation of a 10 year ebay seller like Tim. This is in quite bad form sir.

louisvillekyshop,I did not accuse him of anything. I said that he was outted by experts on this site.

http://augustuscoins.com/ed/fakesellers.html

I am not one of them but when I did examine his coins months ago after he was added to the list, I did find them to appear not genuine.

Do I know for a fact that they arent or werent? No I do not. its kinda hard to tell unless you have it in your hand, measure the weight and test the mattalurgy but if you have a problem with that statement, take it up with the members of that site, not me.

Personally, They are usually correct when they out fake sellers. and people make mistakes.Sellers make mistakes. Some even good sellers can sell fakes by accident or just not being careful enough. Nobody can prove a coin is 100% genuine when they sell it online via photos.And I would trust them that they werent going to add that name without conclusive proof that what this seller had in his store was not genuine and could clearly be seen as not genuine

I did not add his name to that list. I did not accuse him to add that name. All I am stating is a fact- the fact that his name was added to a list of fake sellers on a site of experts who havent been wrong so far.

None of what I said is in dispute or can be disputed.

and I did not openly run down the reputation of anyone. This sellers reputation was already run down. I can choose to believe what the site said, or NOT. I choose to believe it because I saw the coins when they were available months ago immediately after the name was added they indeed look highly suspect.

And Noahs_ark_usa would also threaten lawsuits against people badmouthing him. Should we believe his coins are real too because an expert accuses him? We could believe they are real... and we would be a FOOL.

Modern coin forgeries are getting better and better.

Every hobby (or obsession) has a downside. One of ours is the existence of fakes and sellers who are knowingly selling them. The ONLY way to combat this, is to take multiple measures to avoid this pitfall.

I have 3 pieces of advice:

1. Educate yourself (know what you are looking for and how to spot fakes) Even a basic understanding will help.

2. Join a forum(s) community (like this one) and learn from people who have already had the bumps and bruises of bad and good choices (cleaning, buying, storing, displaying etc...)

3. Buy from reputable dealers - That being said, if you know what to look for (I'm not there yet), you can take chances on a great deal.

Following these rules will help but never guarantee that you won't buy a fake in the future. As we've said many times, everyone gets fooled at one point or another.

Coinnewbie3;

I see you are quoting from the Coin Forgery Discussion List. So I went to the Yahoo discussion group where the information came from and indeed a search shows exactly one post about tim_wssmi172 from June 30, 2009. As you state you quote experts on a site and point to Augustcoins site in which he list apparently fake sellers from Coin Forgery Discussion List, and that list shows exactly one member who in 2009 posted once about Tim. That does seem a bit unfortunate for Tim that a full 9 years later after a single person posted about him we see a discussion such as this. So I guess I need to next ask if the private site run by Augustcoins ever pulls people off the list after a period of time? Tim might be someone who could make that case to have his name removed. And I notice a search of the Coin Forgery Discussion List serve, when you search VCOINS, has a great many posts where people question various coins by VCOINS dealers. Does Augustcoins have a separate site where he lists all the VCOINS dealers mentioned on the Coin Forgery Discussion List serve? If not this all seems highly unfair to Tim.

Yes thats the site alright. I just said that last night.Maybe, I understand how things could get misrepresented.

Heres a thought, and bear with me here while I play devils advocate. And once again nobody is accusing tim or anyone else of anything

First- If I know the first seller was fake I wouldnt be asking all of you on here if he was, right?So dont kill the messenger. I didnt put him on that list.To continue ,What if tim was selling fakes in 2009?
What if( and this is speculation) That once he discovered that he was found out that he stopped selling fakes.They could have gotten it wrong back then , true,but there are several possibilities IF the site I mentioned did in fact have it right before

1.Tim intentionally sold fakes and once he found out he was outted he decided to immediately stop selling fake coins so his store rep wont be damaged so he can keep his account on ebay and still make a profit by selling only genuine ones

2. Tim intentionally sold fakes and once he found out he was outted he decided from then on sell fakes that were more convincing ,or making them himself and being more carful in detail to fool others.

3. Tim did NOT intentionally sell fake coins but realising he did, remove all the coins that were suspicious and was more careful from then on, selling genuine ones.

This doesn't just apply to Tim, but every seller out there who has sold fakes, either intentional or not...

In order to Tim to sue anyone he would have to prove that the coins he was selling( which are prob long gone by now) were( and appeared) genuine.Which is impossible since I doubt they were NGC verified.

Furthermore, he would have to prove someone was trying to intentionally sabotagehim . IN a free society you can make accusations towards anyone as long as you feel you have proof to back it up.

Nobody is getting a lynch mob. Nobody is contacting ebay.... this is all just speculation.

Tim may be innocent until proven guilty in many courts of law( depending where you live) but then so are his accusers as well. They are also innocent until PROVEN guilty) So think twice about throwing the words libel and slander around.

Why I trust the site is they are pretty careful about who they put on their list... So I dont know if tims current store has any fakes( which is why I asked you all ) but I still believe that he did have them back in 2009... and I was jsut asking if he still did have any fakes thats all... or if he got wiser or innocently made errors and is more careful now.

So, could you please look over BOTH sellers and tell me what you think?Thanks!
