From looking at the obverse of the coin one would get the impression it's from Gteat Britian, G:BR:. On the reverse under the coat of arms it has ADVANCE AUSTRALIA. Does this signify some special event ? Where were you advancing to and did you get there ? Curious.

"ADVANCE AUSTRALIA" There's your clue...I imagine there's a kangroo and emu on the reverse too? What year is the sixpence?

Hi Kurt, coins are 1951 and 1963. Found them in the world coin gallery, but still wondering what the inscription means.

As an interesting note, there are two 6d for 1951. If there's a "PL" just below the ADVANCE AUSTRALIA banner, then it was minted in London, the other in Melbourne. Both dates are pretty common otherwise.

Quote: On the reverse under the coat of arms it has ADVANCE AUSTRALIA. Does this signify some special event ? Where were you advancing to and did you get there ? It's actually a secret plan for world domination, but don't tell anybody. "Advance Australia Fair" is our national anthem, but only officially since 1984. The song's history goes back to the 19th century when it was first performed by Andrew Fairfax at a Highland Society function in Sydney on 30 November 1878. The song quickly gained popularity and an amended version was sung by a choir of 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanc...stralia_FairI hope this has something to do with it, otherwise just go with the world nomination theory.

It was the motto, just like "E Pluribus Unum" on US coins. "Advance" is used here in the sense of "progress" - the pre-WWI concept that things were always going to get better, especially if we all work together to make it better. You can find much the same concept expressed on some of the pre-Federation tokens of the Australian colonies, and on those of nearby New Zealand. "Advance Australia" was also used by the Federalist movement as a motto in the years leading up to Federation. By the way: "G. BR." doesn't stand for "Great Britain"; the legend is in Latin, and the Latin word for "Great" is "Magnus". "D.G." stands for Dei Gratia, "by the grace of God"; "BR. OM." is short for Britanniarum Omnium, "of all the Britons".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
