Hello everyone,

First, apologies if this is not the correct place to identify the item pictured. I think it is a medal, but structured like a brooch. It was given to me by my Grandfather, who I believe inherited it himself.I really have no idea what it is.

My Grandfather told me that it was trench art from the Napoleonic Wars, but I always thought it looked much older. The depictions on the item appear militaristic (long boat, man in helmet, trident), which made me wonder whether it was some early medal.

I visited the British Museum once and saw something that looked a bit similar in terms of structure and style in the Viking section.

Anyway, any help or input would be very gratefully received.

Best wishes,

Al.

The "coins" are definitely modern - meaning, in this context, 19th century onward. For the most part they seem to mimic ancient Greek archetypes. Given the neoclassicism of the piece, I would guess that your grandfather may be correct for the general timeframe - early 19th century or perhaps a bit later.

Hi Bob, thanks for the info. I am from Brighton in East Sussex, England and so was my Grandfather and his Grandfather etc. The city was pretty much entirely constructed between about 1780 and 1880... so the time frame definitely fits the city's history. We also have a few old theaters here, so may be it was a prop or part of a costume for a play. Do you know if brooches like this were generally fashionable during the early - mid 1800s? Thanks for the input again. I appreciate it.

Sorry, but I have no idea. I just know the obvious: that classical themes/imagery were common (especially in cameos) in European jewelry of the day - that is, during the Neoclassical and Grand Tour periods. I have seen examples of 19th century jewelry that incorporated, like yours, replicas of ancient coins - and I've seen examples in which genuine ancient coins were used.
