Hello, Over the years of CRH-ing and searching pocket change, I have come across some strange looking US coins, which I have just been tossing aside in a box (probably over 1,000 coins in there by now). Many are damaged, defaced, melted, discolored, or just plain weird looking. My thought is that perhaps some day, my grandkids may have a bit of fun looking through this stuff. I have included some photos of some of it . I also have been saving AU/BU coins from past years which I find in circulation (photo included, also). Does anyone else do this?

Yes. And that's a good number of counterstamped state coins!

I give such oddities to my grandkids every year when our families get together at the lake. Three of them bring their coin collections with them to show me. And there's some spirited trading too. Last year a Peace dollar (I always include some good stuff, too) traded hands three times

The coins in the 3rd photo are all gold plated. For some reason none of them were new, but they used fairly worn coins... I keep the AU/BU coins in the last photo in case the grandkids may want to begin collections (cent folders, etc.) someday. They will have a great start to their collections. I also have quite a few wheat cents which still have some mint luster, which I am saving for the same purpose. Abe smoking the pipe is one of my favorite finds....

Yes , I always save those oddities ; bent, cut, train track cents etc. Most old timers would know about putting a penny on a train track . They get flattened and elongated .

I keep all high grade AU coins I find and put them in plastic tubes. I guess you can't really call them BU because I pull them out of circulation, but they're about as close as you can come. I'm pretty picky about what I save. I recently pulled out some quarters that I put away back in the late 80's and I must say they looked pretty good.

My pile of stuff like that is a lot of coins from places like ChuckECheese and other places that have their own coins. I also have a box of coins with rotated reverses.

I also have hundreds of various tokens (arcade, etc.) which the grandkids can play with (tiddly winks, bingo, "heads or tails", etc.), and a sack of foreign coins which should be very interesting for them to look at (they can try to determine countries of origin, denominations, etc., as well just to look at the various designs such as animals, people, etc.). I wish I had this stuff when I was a young child (many years ago)...
Maybe some day they would like to check out my elongated coin collection, also. Who knows?
