My name is Trista and I have been collecting since I was about 18. My Step-Dad had a collection and I thought it was cool, so he showed it to me and sparked my interest! I had a (and still have - albeit a different company) retail job so I was around registers A LOT! That is where I have gotten a great majority of my collection, trading my own coins and cash for cool things found at work! Everything from foreign coins that I just think look cool, to an Indian head Buffalo nickel! Loads of silver dimes and quarters, and loads of dimes and quarters from 1965 SO frustrating! I also inherited my Step-Dads collection when he passed, I plan to get a book and sleeves as soon as I am able to since all his/mine are in pill bottles (I was a pharmacy tech for a decade and it was easy when I found one at work!). Also, I HAVE purchased one or two coins on Etsy, and some worthless to most but cool af to me paper money from a coin show in the area!

Speaking of, I am roughly half way between Albany and Syracuse. Closer to 'Cuse. If any locals know of any shows let me know!

Trista: to the CCF from Downunder !

If you are around cash resisters, just ask your fellow employees to join you in looking for anything unusual, and just put it aside.
At the end of the week, look through the accumulation and put the culls back into circulation.

Start with a basic date and mint mark set of all circulating denominations, and build duplicate sets of these. Keep the best set of each denomination, and sell the other sets on ebay to fund the purchase of better individual coins from ebay.

Better to get slabbed coins if you don't trust yourself well enough to authenticate and grade accurately, if you are a beginner.

As a student or young worker on a lower income, your new collecting hobby won't cost you much at all.

Plenty of friends here in the CCF, that would be happy to share with you, and help you along the way.

I am more than a short distance from Syracuse and Albany; the Albany in Western Australia would be a lot closer, but would still take me 5 days of non stop driving to get there !
