Can-Anyone-Identify-The-Date-On-My-Shield-Nickel

Can anyone help me tell for sure what date that is. It looks to me like 1879 but I'm not sure. Picked this up for about $1
Rest in Peace

Highly unlikely it is a 78 or 79, those are quite rare, we're proof issues. Suspect last digit is a 9 or possibly an 8...3rd digit is a pushed over 6. The 1868 issue was a very common date coin. I suppose it may be a closed loop 1873, but it seems a damaged 3rd digit

A picture of the reverse MIGHT help. The no rays coins came from three different reverse hub designs one used in 67 and 68, one used only in 68, and one used for the rest of the series.

When you are ready, a little vinegar and hydrogen peroxide will clear it up for you.
