Hello,

I am new to coin collecting. My little guy is into it so I'm really trying to figure things out for him . We were going through a coin roll from the bank when we came across this penny. Hoping someone can help. Thank you guys!! :)

A larger, sharper pic would help, but I'm guessing it's probably just due to exposure to dirt and finger oils during initial circulation.

to the forum! Coins can attract colour from a variety of sources, giving them a variety of colours from dull browns to vibrant pinks, blues, and everywhere in between. But with very extreme exclusions(for example the black beauty Jefferson nickels, which have a rich dark colour to them from being improperly annealed) it achieved the colour it did after being minted.

I agree that it is an environmental effect that is simply called "toning." The more cents you look at, the more variations in color you will find.

Handling coins with your bare hands adds to the acids and oils that are responsible for those colors.

It's just a normal circulated coin with toning.

If you like it, keep it! Buy yourself a couple of coin tubes and put your keepers in it.
