I'm looking at a coin that has a pretty significant price change between grades. AU55 is $235, AU58 is $300 and MS63 is $475 according to a pricing guide. I'm leaning towards an AU58 example as the AU55s and AU53s dont have eye appeal. From a collection standpoint, I have been targeting XF45 to MS64 depending on price. I think the AU58 is fairly graded by the TPG.

What do you do when pricing jumps significantly between grades? I could keep searching for a better AU55 than is currently available or make the jump to AU58. MS63 would be significantly graded above coins in the collection for the date range.

It's all about value, eye appeal, and strike to me. For example, I have an AU-58 coin that looks just as good as an MS-63. I guess you might call it a super slider. It actually has a better strike than many of the MS coins I've seen for the same year/mint. As a result, it's hard for me to justify purchasing an MS coin for that same year/mint no matter how nice it looks or how it's priced. I'm typically content searching for AU-graded coins that look better than most and are comparable to a MS coin, but that's just me.

I like your approach. If we are patient, we can find those AU55 or AU58 examples that really shine and not pay more for a lesser eye appeal MS example.

Exactly. Patience is key, and it makes the hunt more enjoyable IMO.

I suspect that large jumps in prices are due to the older the coin, the more wear from just handling so more difficult to find higher grades.

Part of the reason for the price jump Au55 to MS60 is emotional / philosophical.

A Mint State coin is often regarded as never been in circulation.
"MS" in other grading systems equates to "Uncirculated".
