Just a quick question.
What year did the San Francisco Mint stop releasing coins for circulation and become proof only?

In looking at our coin facts, it looks like 1954 for quarters and halves, and 1955 for Dimes. Haven't checked the rest, but general observation thus far tells me right around there.

Thanks, I have never looked at the US Coin Facts page. It did have all the answers I was looking for. I was wondering about nickels and it appears that 71 forward was the year that no circulating "S" coins were struck. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I have been finding tons of 1960's and 1970's S mint nickels, should I keep them?

Hi Dave,
I collect one per date/mint, so I would only keep them if I need them for my album. I personally would not keep them unless they are S mint coins from 1971 - now, and then there is a premium because they were proof only issues.
But that is just for my collection. Others might disagree.

The highest S mm I've ever found in cent is 1974. So I'm gonna say 1975 or 1976 was the 1st year that the SF mint started "proofing" their coins.
But I'm probably wrong...

S mint cents were made for circulation until 1974. S mint nickels were made until 1970. You can find the info in the RedBook. Proof mintages are in parentheses and circulation mintages are not.

As to collecting all S mint coins. Many people do exactly that. Note that there has been none made for circulation for only about 30 years now but eventually people will be saying S Mint coins? For circulation? And you'll have thousands of them. Sort of like collecting Buggy Whips, Beanie Babies, etc. You never know.

SBA dollars were struck in San Francisco for circulation in 1979 and 1980 (the 1981's were NIFC). So it would seem that the last cent was 1974, the last nickel in 1971, the last dime in 1955, the last quarter and half in 1954, and the last dollar in 1980.
