I saw this today in Harlan Berk's 204 bid or buy after sale and bought it. This is my first Celtic coin. What attracted me to it was the depiction of a god on the obverse. The obverse was so unusual I had to have it.

Celtic Gaul, the Remi; 1st Century BC, AE 20, 4.04g. De La Tour-8145. Obv: Great God facing. Rx: Boar standing r. From a private Kansas City Collection mostly formed in the 1980s-1990s. Purchased from Chris Rudd. Some porosity. Fine

Uh-oh. This is neither a coin of a historical figure nor of one of the 12 Caesars. And it's not made of gold. You may have to commit to a new set with this one, Andrew. Celtics? Boars? Great gods?

Excellent pick-up.

Thanks Bob. It just caught my eye so to speak. As I do more reading on ancient and medieval history I find myself investigating different areas of collecting. I only add 12 Caesars coins now when I can find an upgrade or an interesting rarity. I am however, going to expand one branch of my historical figures collection. I currently have a few family members of Henry II. I have Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and one of their sons, Richard the Lion heart. I would like to add John, Geoffrey Duke of Brittany, and Otto IV holy Roman Emperor. I would also like to add Eleanor's first husband King Louis VII of France. I think this would make a nice grouping. I am currently bidding on a very important addition to my "historical figures as dramatized by Shakespeare" collection. However, I will not mention who it is quite yet. I want to win it first.

I also meant to mention that I really enjoyed the coins you posted in the eye candy thread. You have a fabulous collection Bob.

Thanks again for the comments.

Very nice! Is this one AE, or potin? It looks like the latter - indeed the Gallic potins are IMO the most interesting of celtic coins, being mostly original designs.

Thanks Finn, the descriptions says AE but I am not sure. It was the look of it that caught my attention.
Rest in Peace

It is celtic Remi's tribe coin. Made of potin indeed.
