Am I wrong that it is legal to own the 1933 double eagle now, as well as the 1933 eagle? I think that at one time the treasury department confiscated them, but not now.

If you look at the situation in 1933, the recall of gold did not take place until March, so presumably you could have obtained one from the mint in Jan and Feb. If so, then why would they have been illegal in the first place. Congress can't pass ex post facto laws, So any coins obtained before the recall order should have been legal from the gitgo.

In recent times that huge 2 kilogram gold maple leaf "coin" is worth a pretty penny.

In my copy of the 2008 Red Book, pages 399 to 403, there are listed the top 250 Auction prices on coins. The number one listed on page 399 is the 1933 $20 , Gem Bu coin in July, 2002 for $7,590,020.00
Of course there is no information as to if there was a sales tax on that sale. Now here in Illinois we have the highest sales tax in the country so imagine another 10.25% for taxes.

Yea I just read that just carl. Unbelievable isn't it. My guess on the most expensive coin would have been the Liberty V nickel that there are only 5 known to exist.
