I found this beauty while coin roll hunting. I was wondering how the "full steps" works...there are some nicks, does it count? As always, thanks for the help!

I can't tell very well from the full-coin pics, but it appears to MS or high AU. That's an excellent roll find!

For the steps, I would not grade it FS. There are too many tiny breaks from strike strength at the lower center and there are a few dings that cut across the steps. It is very, very close for me, though.

1940 nickels have clearer steps after the dies were reworked, so 1940 reverses are expected to be better than, say, 1938. That's why you have two reverse types for the transitional 1939 nickels and 1940 FS prices are lower than the previous years.

Sharper full front and back pics would help with grading.

I agree with the AU-58 grade. It has some minor circulation wear as well.
Errers and Varietys.
