Hello All. First time posting on this forum. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me? I inherited a coin from my Grandfather after he passed, and quite frankly I'm stumped. Not really sure WHAT I have. Could someone enlighten me? I'd really appreciate it!

I've attached a picture of the coin below. All I know is that it's dated 1795. Thanks very much ahead of time!!

Thank you so much for helping me solve the mystery!!
Any idea why it had been holed, and how much this is worth? Probably should let my insurance company know... :-D

It could have been holed for any reason, there's really no way to tell for sure why it was holed unless you ask who holed it(which could have been done over 100 years ago. My guess would be for jewelry purposes.

Value is really difficult to tell, if it weren't holed, maybe around $1000 just by doing a quick search. With the holes, it knocks it down a couple hundred bucks at most. I could be off but that seems about right to me.

Thanks Adam, I think you may be right on that... I just found an article that people would sometimes fasten them to their clothing/make jewelry to show their support and patriotism for the cause. Pretty fascinating history in such a small little coin!

I know there is a national dealer that specializes in holed coins. He has two 1795's on his site at the moment both are in better condition and only have a single hole. http://holeduscoins.com/

I don't know if there is enough detail left to nail down a variety--at this level, knowing which one it is likely doesn't matter.

Welcome
