I've just started selling on ebay. I've made two sales, buying shipping labels from ebay. Both times they gave me a discount-$2.66 instead of $3.50. Is this because I'm new?

No, shipping is always discounted when you ship with ebay. It is a discount from how much it would cost if you paid for shipping from the post office or somewhere else besides ebay.

Oh, I thought $3.50 was standard. While I'm at it I do have another question. Just a little background info. Right now I have 9 listings. Eight of them are mixed lots of mostly silver, with $3.50 shipping. I also have a listing of 6 common date IHC, which I want to send for 0.75 without tracking or label. Can I consummate such a sale without interference from e-bay?

You can sell things that way, but you do get dinged a bit without uploading tracking for all sales but it's not a huge deal. However and its a big however, anything you ship without tracking you need to be prepared to give away for free. Anything shipped without tracking all a buyer has to do is tell ebay they never got it and ebay will force a refund 100 percent of the time. You're basically hoping the other person is honest when you ship that way

Quote: You're basically hoping the other person is honest when you ship that way I'm aware of this. My rationale has to do with the huge number of e-bay listings that have prohibitive shipping costs given the low value of the coin(s). It's absurd and I didn't want to be one of those types of seller.

As mentioned, the discount is because of buying labels through ebay. By the way, the discount is higher for items shipped by weight than those using Flat Rate. I have shipped coins in envelopes without tracking and have not had a problem (yet). It is, however, a calculated risk. If you plan on selling more on ebay, the discounts add up substantially for buying labels through them. Just make sure your entered weight & dimensions are correct for the package.

You can remove it from ebay and go to the post office and buy postage there.

Shipping large amounts of items without tracking info via first class mail will prevent you from being an ebay Top Rated seller. I often ship cheap items via first class mail with no tracking, but don't care that it counts against me because I can't comply with the 1 day handling time ebay wants to become a top rated seller nowadays.

Not to mention the 30 day returns you have to offer for the discount which is insane for coins. The discount is basically nothing now anyway a lot of people said it's not worth it anymore

Quote:You can remove it from ebay and go to the post office and buy postage there. I'm still not sure what to do. For example, I just sold a small mixed lot. My plan was to basically send it letter post with stamps (my shipping charge was $0.75). But e-bay priced the shipping at the $2.66 I had been getting for tracked stuff. I went along with it because of my uncertainty. Essentially, I guess I need to know how I could've used untracked shipping in a way that e-bay would tag the package as shipped. There doesn't seem to be that option. Thanks for everyone's help.

Even if your shipping a coin without tracking, you should still mark it as shipping soon after shipping it. Most customers understand the lack of tracking for very low value items, but they still expect to be notified that their item has shipped.

and it affects your average handling time.
