After reading SPP's response on this post:
http://goccf.com/t/325008&whichpage=2

I wanted to post this penny to get opinions on whether it is a post-strike split planchet.

Well-struck reverse, and blurred obverse with a striation pattern visible.

However, the weight (2.7 g) is only slightly less than a normal 1981 penny (2.8 g).

It's a legitimate error coin. Very nice find and congratulations! Not sure which error it is, but it's an error though.

Struck through a late-stage die cap? That's the best I can come up with. It's cool looking, in any case.

Not a split planchet. Looks to be struck through a large stage die cap that is starting to wrinkle...

I agree that it was struck through a late-stage die cap (or a mid-stage uniface die cap).

Thanks everyone.

Would this then be a 'rarer' late-stage die cap, as it was stuck to the anvil die?

Most of the die caps I have seen have the reverse blurred (thus having stuck to the hammer die?)...
