I would like to know who determines the prices for detailed coins . Like heavy scratches , dents , environmental damage , holed ,etc. I think the prices that some of these guys put on details coins is a sin . Why pay those prices when for a few dollars more you can have your coin straight graded . My own personal rant .

I would say the buyer of a details coin would set the market value?.

Details coin pricing is a guessing game. Not every problem is equal and there are some that get hit with details where it's a bit of a head scratcher from them being overly harsh. The less noticeable and less severe the problem the less value it loses but it's generally just a guessing game what an appropriate discount would be.

That said yes some people do try and sell details coins for crazy premiums. It's pretty easy to see if its just a case of a seller disagreeing on a nice coin or two where other details coins are priced with reasonable discounts besides those, or if its a seller that just wants moon money for all of them like they're the best ever

Then just what's it detailed for, a light cleaning contrasted to a nail hole? Or a bent one contrasted to an unevenly worn one with a XF obverse, F12 reverse? I do see your point TBop, why sellers put a top dollar from some off the wall price list on a damaged coin is nutz?

People list details, cull, damaged, ugly coins at outrageous prices because somewhere out there some sucker is crazy enough to buy them.

I see it time and time again.

At auction, buyers set the price. Open listings, sellers set the price, and buyers decide if it's acceptable and either pay it, negotiate an agreeable price, or don't buy it at all.

And if the seller sets the price too high, he sits on the coin for ages until he finally lowers it to a point where the buyer thinks it's reasonable. So the buyer sets the final price.

Sellers can ask whatever price they want, but buyers will determine the actual selling price.

Of course, human behavior, and "markets" are not always rational. There is always the occasional impulsive buyer who doesn't have an appetite for research, and will overpay ... thereby inciting other sellers to ask inflated prices.

True. Price is not really set until money changes hands.
