The 1998 commemorative silver dollar marking the 125th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was available from the RCM in multiple packaging options:

- Individual Brilliant Uncirculated
- Individual Proof
- Annual Proof Set
- Silver Dollar and Collector Pin Set, and
- Silver Dollar Gift Set

I've posted about the RCMP Dollar and Collector Pin Set here: 1998 RCMP Dollar and Pin Set

This post concerns the Silver Dollar Gift Set. It was the second silver dollar Gift Set offered by the RCM and its components are essentially the same in design as the 1997 Canada-Russia Hockey Silver Dollar Gift Set that preceded it. Read about the Hockey Gift Set here: 1997 Canada-Russia Gift Set.

The Gift Set includes the 1998 RCMP commemorative silver dollar in brilliant uncirculated (BU) finish, a laser-engraved maple display stand featuring the inscription "1873 - 1998" along with the RCMP's 125th anniversary logo which features a RCMP officer on horseback within a maple leaf. A small "collectible card" with graphics and information about the current (circa 1998) and past (circa 1902) uniforms of the RCMP is also included.

The commemorative reverse of the SD was designed by Adeline Halvorson; it was engraved by Sheldon Beveridge. The primary design feature is that of a mounted RCMP officer wearing a pill-box hat. The hat indicates that the image is that of an officer prior to 1902; wearing of the wide-brimmed Stetson hat was approved as part of the uniform in 1902.

The BU SD is 36.07 millimeters in diameter with a weight of 25.175 grams; the composition is 0.925 fine silver (i.e., sterling silver). The SD contains 0.7487 troy ounces of silver. The coin is 2.95 millimeters thick and has a reeded edge.

The total mintage for the brilliant uncirculated SD was 81,376. I have not seen a production figure for the Gift Sets, but it would not surprise me to learn that 5,000 or fewer of the sets were sold - the set appears in online auctions and dealer listings far less frequently than do the individual brilliant uncirculated SDs.

The set originally sold for $24.95. The current market price for the set is essentially the same after 30 years.

I enjoy these "added value" sets and find the additional information included in them worth the price of acquisition.

@DBM / Alex A: Thanks for the positive feedback!

I realize that such posts aren't everyone's "cup of tea" but I enjoy putting them together and hope that other collectors can learn from them.

I received one of these sets (with the box and wooden stand) as a gift a while back. I was not aware of the other packaging formats for this silver dollar. Thanks for the info!
