I respectfully personally don't agree that it's Die Damage. I think it's a Struck Through error, but I think the glare from the picture might have been difficult to tell if that area is raised or not. To me, it doesn't looked raised. I think at this point, I'll contact Mike Diamond, and see what he thinks of this.
The first coin appears to show die damage, specifically a textured die dent. As to what caused it, I can't speculate. The second coin was struck through some sort of filament. There's no way to determine its composition or origin.
Thank you Mike Diamond for responding! So it's a textured Die Dent then? That's a pretty interesting find tropicalbats! Definitely worth keeping, as it's very unusual.
I think Mike may have been referring to die damage caused by an instrument that went into the die void. A die dent would not reach that deep into the void. The lines he mentioned was probably striation lines on the instrument leaving the lines.
