It looks as if the bottom of the 3 took a hit and and the metal was pushed downward.
Rest in Peace

Ah, really? Think! Could that have possibly happened with the machining design of a Galvano reducing hub maker? Oh, that's how a die is made back then. They were made for each year at a time. It was the mint marks that were applied by hand to each working die, no details were done by hand on individual dies.

So what could that be but a flattened contact hit?

The "3" took a hit, causing the metal to get pushed over and flattened. It's Post Strike Damage.
Errers and Varietys.
