This coin is one I found in a selection of Roman cleaners, but I cannot find any close match in Van Meter. Furthermore, the lettering is babble and the images are what I would call crude. The reverse is about 165 or so degrees rotated from the obverse. Size: about 16 mm; composition, probably bronze.
Is this a barbarian? Who has more info on these coins? Thanks in advance.
Good - at first I thought it could be a Constantinople commemorative, so I guess I'm in the ballpark when it comes to ID'ing most Romans ... at least unless they're worn down to what I call "skippers", or what you'd use to skip across a pond!
"15mm 2.4gm Laureate, helmeted, cuirassed Type E" ... and just as echizento states, it's a Constantine VLPP imitation. The two men on the reverse with the floppy hats are a hoot, though. Ah, what fun!
These coins were not authorized issues, but imitations of the real coins (counterfeits). It's hard to say what they are worth, though I would guess they have some value.
echizento- It is true that these coin were counterfeits, but they were contemporary counterfeits that mainly circulated in areas of Europe that were not supplied with Roman coins or were not entirely controlled by the Roman Empire.
