I'm trying to figure out why the late 1970 series pennies I have are very similar to the look of the copper coated zinc

You don't have any errors. The good news is that they're not fake. They genuine. Anyways, the reason why they look like that is because some have been in circulation longer than the others have. All of them are spendable.
