I have a few pictures of this interesting date issue. Although the coin is rough, I can see that it looks like there was another object stamped beneath the first 7 in 1776 of the date area. Have a look and let me know your thoughts. initially I thought it was just damage, but upon closer inspection, it really looks like something else was under this. The pictures are what they are. I did my best.

A Vegas slot machine dollar I bet. Is worn in that area around the rim from the mechanisms of the slots. The reeding pretty smashed?

Whatever caused it, it wasn't done at the mint
so it is PMD. (Post Mint Damage)

PS-
Please orient your pictures right side up as
per CCF Instructions.

PMD
Short for post mint damage. Damage sustained after the coin was struck.

Your post was moved to the appropriate forum for the proper attention.

I agree, it is post strike damage. Ikes are big and difficult to miss. They get beat up a lot.

Just a damaged coin. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's worth face value.
