Just checked ebay:

2018 Circulation Set - $29.95 With GITD 50 cents

Not interesting item. Cardboard card with the holes and circulation coins, while 50 cents not GITD Coat of the Arms, but the Canada map and our flag all over it.
I don't have enough imagination, what is GITD effect represents here. Canada at the night?

Anyway, nice item for the foreign tourists to bring home, or collectors of 'every 50 cents piece'

The 50-cent coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the formal establishment of the boundary between the US and Canada - the boundary line can be seen as a thick line on the coin.

As for the significance of the the GITD effect, I would hazard a guess and say that it is no more than a "look what we can do" gimmick on the part of the RCM to stir interest in the set. I agree that the effect has little significance in terms of the commemorative meaning of the coin.

Relief of the $250 Kilo Voyageur coin is very nice.

With the oval concave shape, my wife's first comments were: "would anybody like some ice cream?" In all honesty, the shape of this coin looks like a perfect banana split bowl!

Oh My!

There is no buzz or excitement at all with this September release. What does this say about NCLT?

No sell out of the Big Coins yet. I guess Steve Bromberg can't use the claim of a sell out in "minutes" or "hours" to flog the Big Coins as a rarity. Probably Steve will say the last Big Coin set (2018) sold out rapidly or this new set sold out in days (if it does).

I think the gig for the Big Coins is over. Collectors have are tired of the same thing over and over.

I can honestly say that there was nothing in the release that interested me. I will pick up the set with the GITD 50cent coin but only to keep my 50 cent set rolling. $30 is an outrageous price but it is only $30... not the $4,000 + tax expected for the big coin subscription.

Nothing for me in the September release.

The five-piece SML fractional set is interesting, however, due to its use of blue rhodium to add selective colour to the one-ounce SML - I think the effect makes for an attractive SML coin.

Rhodium is a fairly scare precious metal (100x more scarce than gold) with a current spot price of ~$3,100 CAD per ounce. As a result, there aren't many rhodium coins available in the marketplace. When it is used, it is mostly used as a plating material over silver.

For those looking for a solid rhodium coin, a one-ounce piece was recently struck for Tuvalu

I think it says that many former Canadian NCLT collectors and speculators have moved on to either the products of other mints or the myriad of attractive bullion coins that are available from mints around the world; some collectors may have dramatically reduced their NCLT spending in favor of classic circulation coins.

No matter the reason, it is certainly a different NCLT environment vs. a few years ago.

I'm not sure why the RCM feels the need to make commemorative coins commemorating a certain coin issues anniversary? Talking about the SML in particular. Thoughts?

@TheForce: I agree completely. I've never been a fan of a given coin commemorating itself. The RCM, however, is clearly a fan of the concept!

Maybe the RCM is trying to capitalize on a bit of nostalgia with such issues to help boost their sales?

Completely agree here... I picked up this coin (sculpture?) just because I am an avid collector of Inuit Art. The first release in this series (Polar Bear) was executed a bit better, based on my gut feeling.

Will post photos and follow-up observations upon arrival!

I think any NCLT speculators will have moved on and there are plenty of places to go including as you note, the myriad of attractive bullion coins that are available.

I think that NCLT collectors and I count myself in this group, are waiting for the market value to rationalize. Most NCLT is readily available through internet, show and LCS sources. With the internet acting as a global market place, there is very little that is not available 2+ years on but at much more reasonable prices.

These days, I only buy coins that maintain a personal series direct from the RCM... (Unc sets, Silver $ and $100 Gold). Just about everything else I get on the secondary market after a couple of year wait. Very few coins ramp up in price from the RCM issue price and stay there for 4+ years. The exceptions can be listed on a very short page (2013 $75 Superman possibly). Even the 2011 Ladybird Murano coin is showing evidence of price slides though it has a way to go to hit issue.
