I'm searching through my coins and separating them by date. I run across this 2012, looks like just yuck that stuck to it. Try to gently take the yuck off to realize it's not top service gunk. Any ideas what would have caused it or someones poor attempt at making some sort of fake?

Looks like zinc rot.

Edit:
Looking at it again, John1 might be right.
In either case, its PMD.

It looks like Environmental Damage has caused the Zinc core to start rotting. I think the Copper plating broke, causing the Zinc core to get exposed.
Errers and Varietys.
