Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive reference about mintmark locations on world coins? I have such a hard time with all the British Commonwealth coins and determining if they are H, or KN, or plain. I search and search, if I find no mark, it must be plain. Not a good strategy. Australian predecimal and British India are another challenge. Krause sometimes does a good job and shows pics, sometimes an alright job and basically describes, but often no mention of location.

G'day, in Oz, we had a Prime Minister who told us -
"Life isn't meant to be easy"
- to which we collectively replied -
"It isn't meant to be impossib;le either."

It is my belief that whoever designs mintmarks and chooses where to place them, was firmly in the Prime Minister's camp.

The one that troubles me is a Sydney St.George Sovereign: trying to find one little squiggle under a horse's hoof can be a challenge.

Love the French system: a great big letter, right next to the date. Spanish Dollars are good too.

Back to your question, Renniks Catalogue includes pics of where to find mintmarks on Australian predecimals, and as far as I have noticed, deals with the varieties comrehensively and clearly.

When I'm looking for mintmarks, I remind myself that our hobby is not only a study of history, geography, art, heraldry, and metallurgy ... it is character-building as well.

It's just a reminder that the mints put mintmarks on coins for their benefit, not for ours.

I would assume that Krause is the closest you'll get to a "whole world mintmark guide", and it's usually pretty good. But for the countries which aren't so well explained, the people most interested in mintmarks will probably be interested enough to buy the specialist books about that particular country or series, and these specialist books go onto details about where to find the mintmarks, privy marks etc..
