I ran across this 1961 Jefferson nickel that I think has doubling on the obverse & reverse. It has the short die gouge just upper left of the star that's listed in Wexlers list.

What your seeing is Mechanical Doubling caused by the flattening and reduction in devices. Keep looking and you'll find one!

Nice find. Amazing you could see that. The Obverse is obvious just worn out dies. The reverse is really neat the way even the base of the building appears doubled. Yet all from just worn out dies not a true Doubled Die. Still nice find.

Thanks for looking. I didn't think it was MD because the lettering on " Monticello " has errors going both directions
Rest in Peace

Redneck, hi to a fellow Columbian. Who's Mizzou? Yes, the MD can go multiple directions. I use the example of a hammer hitting a nail. The hammer will bounce upon the head numerous times, never landing in the same spot or even angle. The bounce is the release of mechanical energy, the greater the MD shows, the looser the die was in it's holder.

With Mechanical Doubling the underlying imprint appears flat, not rounded over.

It's Machine Doubling, since the devices are reduced in size, and it's shelflike in appearance.
