While I don't pretend to be an expert on spotting fake coins, I ran across this one and immediately the red flags went up.

Everything about this coin seems to say fake, but like I said, I'm no expert.

Nothing jumps right out at me other than possibly the surfaces, but that might w=be explained by the fact that it appears to have been soldered to something in the past and later broken off. Possibly with an attempt to remove the solder.

I agree. That coin is not as the seller describes. It was soldered to something and broken off. Maybe a money clip ...

Not worth $89 ... IMO

Doesn't look fake to me, IMO. But surfaces have certainly been altered, like Conder101 and jmwilson mentioned.

It doesn't look fake to me. The reason that it looks 'different' is that 1834 was a year of change for bust half dollars - so it is different.

A new obverse master die was created with changes to the head, neck, and face. The letters and numbers were also different - large date and large letters, large date and small letters, or small date and small letters.

OK, thanks everyone for your input. I'm not real familiar with the capped bust halves so your help is much appreciated.

I wont speak to authenticity but I believe the reverse exhibits a legitimate mint error. IMO it's a lamination or other type of planchet flaw.

IMHO .... Genuine with PMD.

This seller offers a great many problem, often heavily cleaned coins. I once returned a coin that was deceptively photographed. Consequently, I was later blocked from bidding on a rare counterstamp. I had a buddy purchase that one for me.
