Gases underneath the finish , or is it a die chip or die gouges.

Hard to say for sure. Most likely gas bubbles. But there's a chance it's a die dent. To test, place the coin under a microscope and press on the elevated feature gently with the tip of a toothpick. If it flexes, it's a gas bubble. If it does not flex, then it's probably a die dent.

Thanks Mike for the info on gas bubbles- My co-worker has a mic- I'll be testing it this week along with my 21 S morgan that I think has "something underneath the S" also-

I'll post the results ASAP!

OK- We tested the coin according to the instructions given by Mike D.

Nothing flexed- everything was solid- no movement whatsoever.

Its a die-dent- not gas bubbles.
