Greetings from southern Ohio. New to your sight and wondering if anyone might be able to enlighten me about this coin. Appears to be copper sandwiched under zinc. Appreciate any comments/ info you might share. If I can provide any additional info please let me know.
Well I do have to say that's a first! It is a modified coin, but one not too often done. It is half-plated. Usually they plate the whole coin and try to pass it off as an unplated strike. this is just "plated" with I imagine a metalic paint. (An acetone bath may remove if paint) If you weigh the coin it may be more than the standard 2.5gr if plated with a metal like zinc/aluminum. (I'll guess 2.6gr or more). You can tell because of the ridge on the rim, it's piled up a bit. A truly unplated cent isn't like the copper core clad coins, it is completely encased, not wafered.
Gave coin an acetone bath and no color came off. Weight is 2.5g. Owner of this coin is going to send it to me and our local coin club members are going to view it under jewelers scope and give me their opinion to pass on to the owner.
