I have had this really neat looking penny for a long time and real curious to learn more about it. The reverse damage is not reflected on the obverse.

It's not an error unfortunately. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD), meaning that it happened after it left the U.S. Mint. It was flattened with brutal force.
