In the 1963 film "From Russia with Love" British secret agent James Bond (Sean Connery) is given an attache case with fifty British gold sovereign coins.

In the 1966 film "Murderers Row", American secret agent Matt Helm (Dean Martin) is given a box with three British half crown coins.

Given the difference in values between the two coins, it appears that the American is traveling on the cheap.

So in modern terms, Bond was given a credit card, and Helm a debit card. But wait... Hilts had a Get Out of Jail Free card:
