Hello All,

This is my second post and reason I joined the forum. Found this coin earlier this evening while sorting through my 1969 pennies searching for known errors from a Cherry Pickers Guide. Wasn't sure the error type and looked up this forum as a place to ask.

Sent a picture to my father as well and he got me a quick answer as to the error type but I still wanted to post it and see what more there is to learn and how common the error might be?

Did my best with my cellphone to get a decent picture to show the impression.

Thanks for looking. :)

Your father is correct. You have a nice die clash on your hands. It is a moderately common error. The issue with clashes is they get polished out as soon as they are discovered, so the really dramatic ones don't last long. Yours is quite nice because of how many Memorial bays are visible on the obverse.

Still, it is a low-end error and does not add too much premium value. I would keep that one, though.

Edit: this is a great example of what's called a "Prisoner Cent" and is a repeatable error, so there are more out there just like yours.

to CCF. I agree with spruett001. It is a very nice one. I would dip it in 100% pure acetone and put it in a 2x2. Is there any sign of a clash on the reverse?

An excellent clash !
Look on the reverse to see if part of the date was transferred to the top right of the memorial building. Looks to have potential for that.

I like the name too. Makes sense with Lincoln surrounded by bars as well.

While I can see some lines not usually present due to the clashing I cannot make out any specifics such as dates with my untrained eye. I will upload a picture of the reverse once I can capture a good one.

I have the coin in a 2x2 holder. I've not heard of dipping it in acetone before(pretty new to this). Any advice how I might go about doing that?

This is the first error coin I've found since I started collecting a little over a year ago. Exciting find.Thank you again for all the great input! :)

You can use the search box at the top to pull up many topics concerning the use of acetone.

You want 100% pure acetone. I get it from the paint section at Wal-mart or a hardware store. I have small widemouth Mason jars and place the coin(s) in it, then pour in acetone to cover the coin(s) completely. If you are worried about scratches from the glass, you can place a folded paper towel in the bottom first. I then close the lid and soak coins for several hours at least. You can swirl the liquid around to agitate any residue on the coin(s).

After removing the coin, I usually just let them air dry, but others have suggested a distilled water rinse, then air or pat dry with a soft cloth Do not wipe!

I hope that helps.
