I am interested in some peoples thoughts on the market and potential future market of this coin. Do you think that the Carson City double eagles are over valued? I currently do not own any Carson City coins nor do I own any gold coins, and thought what a great coin to kill two birds with one stone! As stated in the title it is an NGC graded AU-50 1872 CC liberty double eagle.

Less than 27,000 pieces were minted of this issue, and it is apparent that most entered circulation. With a population of 38 in AU-50 and only 80 finer in all grades, I think that's a pretty solid coin. There's just something about that magical CC mintmark, and there will always be a demand for it. NGC coins trade for about $1500 less than pcgs coins, something to keep in mind while working out the purchase price.

1500$ less? Yikes! Well that is one of the things that I was worried about with this coin. I was wondering being that it is graded AU-50 could it have been XF-45- XF-48 range but NGC bumped it to AU-50 because of the rarity of the coin? I also was wanting to ask the seller if I could take pics of it first so that I can show it to everyone on here and get their opinions. Only problem is that my digital camera is not a very good one for taking closeups with. But I will do the best I can.

It's not so much the ngc bump as the pcgs downgrade. Pcgs is, for the most part, tougher. There's still enough nice ngc coins that would cross to pcgs at the same grade (the odd one even higher) and those are the ones to go after. Otherwise, on a coin like this, I would feel more secure with it already in pcgs plastic. JMHO.

Here is an update, today I met with the seller again and learned that it is actually in PCGS slab. I was mistaken earlier. It is an older type holder that has the green paper with a hologram on the back. He purchased it appx. 15 years ago. It is a nice coin unfortunatley I am not able to take any pics of it that are worthy of posting.
