That's called Zinc Rot corrosion, which is a form of Post Strike Damage ( PSD). It can happen, when the Copper plating breaks, exposing the Zinc core underneath. Air will reach the Zinc, and the corrosion process begins. http://www.error-ref.com/zinc-deter...ncoln-cents/
