In the queue to commemorate a little remembered flash in history when Adolf Hitlers forces invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941. Fuhrer Directive 25 was issued on March 27 1941 and the invasion began on April 6 1941 after a Yugoslav coup overthrew a pro Axis Govt. . The German forces executed an overwhelming combined arms attack that swiftly defeated the Royal Yugoslav forces by April 17 1941. At the same time German forces had to come to the rescue of its Italian Axis partners in Greece and the invasion there, while successful, was not quite so easy as Greek forces, supplied and aided by the British, fought the Nazi's until the end of April when German forces planted the hated Swastika in both Athens and Crete. So why was the diversion into the Balkans and Greece important ? And why was Hitlers decision to attack there so precarious ? Greece especially where he later cursed Mussolini for losing him the war ? These operations postponed Operation Barbarossa , the invasion of the Soviet Union, from May 15 1941 to 22 June 1941. Well over a month of good weather and passable roads the German army could ill afford to lose. And because of these diversions Hitlers forces got within sight of Moscow but no further when the Russian winter set in and brought them to a frozen halt. As well this month gave Stalin much needed time to repair some his much degraded armed forces, eviscerated by his paranoid pogroms of murdering his officer corp. These Occupation Bank notes and coins pay homage to these victims of Nazi aggression and the military decisions that likely cost Hitler the war and changed the course of history. The brave Yugoslavs tied up many Nazi occupation forces by their continued and courageous guerilla war even after being overrun. I will display these items of Historia in their honor as well. On 27 May 1942 Czech resistance Army operatives executed Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of the SS General Reinhard Heydrich, who was not only Chief of Reich Security Main office, In charge of the Protectorates of Bohemia and Moravia, and second only to Heinrich Himmler in the Nazi SS hierarchy ; He was also the Architect of the Final Solution, the Nazi plan to annihilate the Jews of Europe and the USSR. On 20 Jan. 1942 he chaired the infamous "Wannsee Conference". The meeting of the various Nazi ministry's where the plan for mass murder was discussed and exposed, its execution coordinated throughout the German hierarchy of Military, Industry, and Political, administrations. Heydrich ended up succumbing to his wounds on 4 June 1942. Its widely speculated Himmler was the one who exposed him to the infection that ended up killing him because Himmler was becoming jealous of Heydrichs star rising with Hitler. In any event Nazi reprisals were swift and brutal. They murdered 5,000 innocent Czechs and arrested and tortured many more. Leadership of the Final Solution was passed on to Heydrich's subordinate Adolf Eichmann, who was kidnapped many years later from his South American hiding spot by Israeli agents and executed for his crimes against humanity. These 4 occupation coins pay homage to the brave Czechs who never gave up the struggle against the monstrous tyranny of Nazi Germany.

Bohemia & Moravia 4 coin set: 10, 20 , 50 Haleru and 1 KorunaFrom Bohemia & Moravia we have the complete four coin set: 10, 20, & 50 Haleru and 1 Koruna. The coins were struck in zinc and featured the crowned Bohemian lion on the obverse. The 1 Koruna was struck from 1941 to 1944 and had the denomination within linden branches on the reverse. The lower denominations were stuck from 1940 to 1944 and used the reverse designs of the pre-war Czech coins: the St. Charles Bridge in Prague on the 10 Haleru, wheat ears and a sickle on the 20 Haleru, wheat ears and linden branches on the 50 Haleru. Linden branches were a traditional Bohemian symbols of love, stability, and protection  |
