Oh the heck with it. I bought it, and apparently it was the last one since its now "out of stock". But the price was just to good. $1,349 for a MS65 1885 CC MSD was just to good a price to pass up on. This coin had a mintage of just 228,000 making it the 2nd to lowest mintage MSD's ever. And who knows how many 1885 CC's are out there in MS65 anyways. The coin has been gnawing at me for days and I haven't been able to take it off my mind.

I'd bet I could turn around and sell it for more and how many collectables, Morgans especially, can you say that about ? This was my one chance to own one and I had to jump on it.

Quote:

The Gold 2 Shu (Nishu) was minted from 1860 until 1869. It was one of the last coins issued by the once powerful Shoguns who ruled Japan until 1867. The rectangular coin is approximately 11.5mm x 6.5mm and struck in an alloy of 23% gold, 77% silver. Despite being over 150 years old it is one of the least expensive gold coins available to collectors today.

The coin, struck in 1867, was a pivotal year in Japanese and world history because it was the year Emperor Komei died and Emperor Meiji succeeded him, thus beginning the 1868 "Meiji Restoration" which consolidated power under Japan's Emperor's, removing it from what was left of the Tokugawa.

The Restoration led to enormous changes in Japan's political and social structure. Embracing modern western technology, industrialization, economics, and most of all military organization and weaponry. Under Meiji the long slide to modern militarization began as did the cult of the Emperor. Even as they toyed with the idea of Democracy the groundwork was laid for the defeat of the Russian Navy in 1905, Japans involvement in WW1, and the horrors unleashed upon Asia during WW2.
