mrwiskers Pillar of the Community United States 1780 Posts	Posted 09/02/2025 1:34 pm thanks, jbuck, Hondo & Indian ... due to the Cierra Rica (virtually a mountain of silver, still mined today...), Potosi was the America's largest city in this period, with over 160,000 in population. However, being remote, & difficult to reach (13,000 feet in elevation), supplies & news were slow to arrive there ... shortage of minting equipment, particularly dies & punches, made producing coins difficult ... & a dyslexic mint worker added to the making of peculiar features on the cobs ... thus, making for a variety collector's dream. This also makes identification difficult, as records from this era are scarce ... historians & collectors have had to piece together shared info to ?guess? at a lot of the historical record .. Assayer J.X.de Tapia's off-and-on tenure, spanning 1618 - 1639 produced some really diverse (feature-wise) coinage during his early years...
