This is upgrade in my 7070 album a SBA Dollar, the one that I had developed (or maybe already had) an unsightly carbon spot surrounded my a nasty milking halo.

So here is my new 1980-S Proof Susan B Anthony dollar

Here's an ugly little blob of silver I just received (alvareznumismatics / ebay / Chris Alvarez ... great guy to do business with ...)

...........................................................................1758 / Potosi mint / 1/2 real......................

In this period of Spain's exploitation of New World resources, Potosi was the only minting operation still producing cobs. All other mints were using screw-press milling machines.

The amount silver coming out of Potosi's mines was so great, that the mint was literally knocking these "coins" out as fast as possible, with little attention to detail. Just enough of the die design visible, to identify the coin as Spanish, was acceptable. Rarely does the complete date appear, along with Ferdinand's stylized monogram (see attached diagram)...

Normal specified weight for a 1/2 real was 1.72 grams. This 1/2 real is 67% overweight. Ordinarily, cobs were not overweight, especially to this degree. Being this heavy would normally make a specimen's validity suspect. However, in this period (Ferdinand VI / 1746 - 1759), overweight 1/2 reals are not uncommon. Apparently, the assayers were not paying close attention to the small 1/2 reals.

I have 8 of this type, & 3 are overweight (although none of the others to this degree)...
