He knows I collect coins, and always lets me check through his change after he's been abroad. Similarly, I often give him leftover foreign currency if he's planning a trip to a country I've visited. Before he went on this last trip I joked about wanting a Bulgarian euro coin (Bulgaria only joined the Euro two months ago). I didn't really expect to get one, but when I looked through his loose change I found... ...a 2026 Bulgarian 1 euro cent! This was a great surprise, and also unexpected as it's normally the higher denominations like the 1- and 2-euro coins that I get first when a new country joins the Eurozone, as those tend to cross borders more quickly than the low value coins.
