Although it is called a Nickel, it is .75% Copper and only .25% Nickel. It is more of a Copper with Oxygen reaction your seeing. Note how on pennies (Cents) they turn a dark brown as they get Oxygenated. Might be why the Mint puts 5 Cents on the back rather than saying a Nickel.
