Hello.

It's been a few years since I purchased any ancient coins but while organizing my dresser I found this coin. I don't remember purchasing it and even stranger I didn't label what it is. I used to drink so maybe that's why.

At one time I built up a collection of Judean, Roman and Byzantine coins and still have them proudly displayed in my case but this doesn't seem to be any of the above and outside my normal purchases of the day. I'm not even sure I have the coin oriented correctly so please forgive that. If additional pictures are required I can provide.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your coin is a drachm of Kamnaskires-Orodes of Elymais. It's probably a van't Haaff type 12.3. Unfortunately I'm stuck in Portland's airport, two thousand or so miles from my copy of van't Haaff, and so I can't pin it down further than that.

Remember: Don't drink and buy coins. Dangerous combo.

Hello Bob.

I remember you from when I used to post here. Thank you!

I'll do some research but if you could confirm at some point I'd sure appreciate it.

Yes, drinking and buying coins was an interesting combo but I'm well past that now.

Best regards and thanks again.

Home now. Yes, confirmed. Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD, VH type 12.3.

To pin it down further, I would call it a van't Haaff 12.3.1-1B.f. Along with other details that allow for this narrowing down of the attribution (such as the direction of the hair tufts and the single crossbar on the anchor), this particular variety (1-1B.f) has a curious, and as yet unidentified little symbol between the bust and anchor. The symbol on your coin, TMK65, looks very much like the one on the coin van't Haaff uses to illustrate this variety in his book.
