I'm thinking that helmets qualify as hats! Back in 1972, Canada and Russia played the Canada-USSR Series (later to become known as the Summit Series) - an epic eight-game hockey match; Canada hosted the first four games, the Soviet Union the second four. In Canada, single games were played in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver (games 1 through 4, respectively). In the USSR, all four games were played in Moscow. The USSR took the lead in the series in Canada, leaving the country with a 2-1-1 record. Things turned around for Canada in Russia, however, as, after losing Game 5, its team won the final three games to win the series 4 to 3 with 1 tie. In Game 8, Russia led entering the Third Period 5 - 3. but Canada stormed back with three goals, including the last one with just 34 seconds left on the clock! In 1997, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) issued a commemorative silver dollar (SD) to mark the 25th anniversary of Canada's victory in the series. Shown here is a Brilliant Uncirculated example of the coin (it is also available in a proof version), plus the outer sleeve of the Gift Set that features the original photograph of the scene captured on the SD. I've also included a card that reproduces a painting of the scene. 1997 Canada-USSR Hockey Series 25th Anniversary Silver Dollar Gift Set Sleeve with Photograph Capturing Scene Moments After Paul Henderson Scored the Winning Goal for Canada Reproduction of Painting of Scene Moments After the Winning Goal Was Scored

In 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) launched a multi-year program to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its early French settlements. Circulation and collector coins were issued. A silver dollar (SD) commemorating the settlement at Ile Sainte-Croix was issued in 2004 (see link below)/ In 2008, a related commemorative SD was issued, one to honor the founding of Quebec City on the shores of the St. Lawrence River by Samuel de Champlain. (First Nations Algonquin people referred to the river-side area as Kebec - "Where the river narrows.") The commemorative reverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Champlain (at the coin's left) with his early settlement at the foot of Cap-aux-Diamants depicted in the background. Champlain is shown wearing a full-brimmed, beaver felt hat with decorative ostrich plumes. It wasn't a hat worn everyday, but the upper class of the early settlements wore such hats on special occasions. Suzanne Duranceau created the design. 2008 Quebec 400th Anniversary Silver Dollar For more on the 2004 Ile St. Croix silver dollar, check out: - 2004 Ile Sainte-Croix Coins and Stamps SetFor a look at a commemorative medal that shares the Champlain design, have a look at: - 2008 Quebec 400th Anniversary Collector Card with MedalFor other of my posts about Canadian coins and medals, see: Read More: Commems Collection.
