Grading comments welcome on this recent acquisition, please. I think it could use some coin care but otherwise it looks really nice in hand.

I'll be tough on it and give it XF-40. Might just be the pic, but strike looks a bit weak on reverse left side.

EF sharpness borderline AU. Some blue ribbon/coin-care & a light brushing would do wonders and might get it up to AU.

AU-50, EF's don't have that much detail over the ear.

I'm at AU-50. Are we supposed to consider strike weakness when evaluating technical grade?

There is no consensus. Strike weakness is certainly taken into account when determining whether an unc is gem, but not in other cases. I believe it should be considered as a weakly struck coin is not comparable in grade to a fully struck coin imho. Wear vs strike, MD vs PMD, the result is a less attractive coin. The grade should reflect that.

Btw, I said xf45 on this coin bc I believe that an au coin should have some luster. I agree this has Au sharpness, but imho opinion, you need luster for an au grade as per ANA guidelines. TPGs certainly don't agree seeing what they put in straight Au holders.

NS, you have MS coins that are totally brown. Luster helps but not a make or break situation for an AU coin.

There are brown MS coins that have beautiful uninterrupted luster. And others that do not deserve the designation imho. Just because it is brown, it doesn't mean it can't have luster. Copper gets a bigger break than silver, but look at the bust half in the other thread. It is missing luster in 80% of the fields but people and tpgs will call it ms. Try that with a Morgan dollar.
