I initially posted this on the variety forum, which is where it probably belongs, but it is just getting absolutely zero traffic there so I have to post somewhere busier. I need urgent help identifying the variety of this 1797. The reverse is definitely that of S-130 but the obverse is either from S-132, normally paired with a stemless reverse, maybe S-129, normally with an M/E reverse, or a die I don't recognize at all. The date is straighter than on any 1797 obverse die I've seen except the 132, it is also larger and lower than the 130, and I've checked the NCs too, it's none of them. Most of the 1797 obvs are basically the same except for the date punch so I really have nothing else to go on. A more expert opinion would be greatly appreciated.

I think it may actually be a 1798.

Just zipped through all the 1798 type 1s after your suggestion. It definitely isn't any of them. Not sure why you'd guess 98, since it plainly says 1797 and has a known reverse of 1797. What in particular do you see that makes you think it might be 1798?

Shrug. Just a thought, because I can't really read the date in those photos. I'll look it up in Sheldon's book later if I get time.

Just had a thought - could it be an S-130 with a re-engraved date? The relative weakness of the date vs. the other legends wouldn't support this, but the date is very different from any of the known 1797s so I suspect it may not be original.
