who cares where it came from - its widely used, this is a coin forum not an english composition forum.

why would it be un-acceptable

It's not a forum for English, but using consistent terminology is desirable in what is already a confusing world of coin errors.

Using the term "error" may be confusing in that it suggests the coin has extra value because of what is wrong with it. Using the term "damage" instead conveys a decreased value.

As to "manmade", it generally describes an intentional action toward the coin. So, if this was actually dipped in acid, you could call it "manmade damage." If this was caused by acidic soil, I would call it "environmental damage." Coins damaged in coin sorters or vending machines, etc. would be "mechanical damage." (to me)

The only time I might use "manmade error" is if someone intentionally altered/damaged a coin to create the appearance of a true Mint error. Even then, it is just damage.

That's how I see it.

why would it be un-acceptable, I think you are just trying to stir up a problem where none exists.

I disagree with that statement as I have never seen the term "Man Made" written anywhere on this forum ever! I have also never seen the term used on any of the reference sites that most members use when researching.

Just because many of us have never heard this used in Numismatics before and we question it does not mean we are trying to start trouble!

I never said it has never been written here, what I said is that I have never seen it written here. And I suppose if I go back to 02/01/2005 and read every single thread and every post by every member, then I can say that I have seen it written here at least 9,480 times.
