I have read all over the web about cleaning coins but I have not been able to find a definite answer on how to take the tone off of very dark toned Morgans, or even If I should clean them at all. I don"t mind the dark tone because I think It gives it character, but I read that the layer of sulfer (I think) gets thicker over time and can eventually turn your coin black. The morgan is not well worn and is XF at best. I do NOT want to end up with a cleaned (GRRRR just the thought of that word...) coin. Is there a semi simple way I can remove the toning itself and not clean the coin or should I just live with a black toned coin.

Thanks everybody

Just leave it the way it is. If you don't like it you can always sell it and buy one that you like.

Removing heavy toning is cleaning- you can only remove it by removing metal.
Toning can be caused by many things, not just sulfer and it will not necessarily get darker over time unless the current storage environment is what caused the toning in the first place.

Put it in an airtite to stop further toning.

I agree, I would leave it as it is. If you remove the toning it may leave etched metal underneath where what ever has toned the coin has done damage to the coin and just can't be seen while the toning is still there. I have seen where people have sent dark toned morgans to NCS to be "conserved" and it come back looking blotchy and pretty much down right ugly. Most numismatists want original looking coins so dark toning really doesn't matter to them, its the over dipped pasty white coins that they try to stay away from

I have a dark toned 1894 S Morgan, and I've seen more than a few of this date/mm toned dark. I love it. IMO dark toned Morgans are beautiful.

Like I said, I dont mind the dark tone, I like it, It gives it character.
And I am not going to clean or sell it, I saved it from a VERY rude women who would have destroyed the precious morgan.
She sold it to a scrap dealer and I bought it wholesale from the dealer 5 minutes later

Good analogy! Giving a helpless Morgan a safe place to live!
