My wife had this in her purse. I did some research, but not really sure what to make of it, other than it may be fake? Any thoughts?

This is awesome! I don't believe it was made to deceive, but the reason for its creation is puzzling. Play money is a good guess. Token? Charm? Jewelry? There are sinilar looking Civil War tokens, but this has no reverse.

Not a Civil War Token, they were only produced between 1861 & 64.
Looks like the reverse has been ground down as there is no rim.
No matter what it is, there would not be much value in it so
keep it as a novelty coin.
