I want to do a quick search of a couple hundred pennies I have here to see what to keep and what not to keep. Can someone please tell me what the key dates are, the years to watch for the well published errors, and anything else I might need to know. Just in short would help.

thanks
malissa

The best way I have found to check them is online at PCGS.COM (you will know the key dates by the price) And boy some of em are outrages. They only have ms grades so the prices are high. Have fun.http:www.pcgs.com/

Someone will proabably come on and give you a detailed answer, but here is what I do:

1. Save anything 1940 and earlier - any condition (actually, I only save pre-1930 since most 1930's are pretty common)
2. Anything pre-1995 that's AU or better
3. As far as varieties/errors, etc. I pay attention to:

a. 1943 (all mints) zinc penny - doesn't really command a premium, but unusual
b. 1955 double die
c. 1960 and 1960-D small date
d. 1970-s small date.
e. A lot of people automatically save "S" mint date coins. It's true they have lower mintages, but for later dates they really aren't worth any more....

There are a whole BUNCH of errors/varieties out there. https://www.coppercoins.com lists most if not all of them.

A fairly common error in recent memorial cents would be a 98 "AM" (Slightly larger gap between the A and the M in America on the reverse) Becoming a little harder to find. But as Kabiye_Lady said https://www.coppercoins.com is a very complete resource. I recommend, if you are serious regarding errors and cents, their book "Looking through Lincoln Cents" to get a little background info. Who knows you may find an error not yet cataloged. Good Luck!!

the only memorials that are worth a premium are die varieties, so look for repunched mint marks and doubled dies. 1960, and 1970S small dates are good too.

for wheat cents, save everything 1933 and before. there are several that are not worth a premium, but the majority of them are.

If you think you'll do this periodically, I'd also say to go purchase a RedBook. It'll list everything you want to know about which ones are "key dates".....or "semi-key dates".....or "errors" too, about ANY U.S. coin. Lots of info in that book and just a great all around referece guide for you.

And that RedBook is known as the "Coin Collectors Bible" for a reason......but I need to add....don't go by the "dollar figures" in there because they are waaaaayyyyy exaggerated in most cases.
