Well, it has been an interesting experience with this purchase, but the short version is that I was not careful enough as a buyer, and after a long hiatus from
ebay, I was also a bit inexperienced as to how to find the original listing after purchase.
For those interested in the longer version:
I looked at my purchase history and only saw a thumbnail image with the word "Sold" on it. I clicked "View Original Listing", and the picture just disappeared and was replaced by the words "you won this auction", followed by a bunch of listings about what other people bought, or were interested in, followed by sponsored link advertisements. I tried this a number of ways, always with the same results. I was rather frustrated that I could not see the original listing with the full pictures and descriptions. I knew I used to be able to do it about 8 years ago.
I contacted the seller, and she responded that I could return the coin, but she said that she had put it in the description that it had been cleaned, and that I should be able to see that. I tried again a couple of times and still nothing. Then, I happened to scroll about two pages down past all of the advertisements and found the listing with the full size pictures, but I could not see the Description page, because a different listing for a 1902 Half Dollar immediately followed the pictures. So, I contacted her again and said that the cleaning was not in the description, and she responded again that it was, but I could return the coin. So, I looked again, and it finally dawned on me. In the original listing, the title in the description page incorrectly read "1902 Half Dollar" (probably from copying from an earlier listing), but following that was verbage indicating that the coin had been lightly cleaned. If you look at the screen shot, you will probably see why I was confused.
So, I clearly made a mistake in reading the description. As a matter of fact, I may have never even read it, because I do not recall the incorrect title. Anyway, I have told the buyer that it was my error and that I would keep the coin. She has responded that I am welcome to return it.
So anyway, it was a learning experience. I was careless, and in retrospect, I overpaid as well.
